6 Names are a source of intrigue and an opportunity for creativity. That's why I love that monograms have become popular again. You can find your initials in jewelry, sewn on accessories, and even added to nails. It's hard to fit all the attributes of a single person into one name, let alone one letter, but with an artistic hand at the helm, you can say a lot with very little. I like the idea of a letter standing for something bigger. Case in point: my only sister is getting married this month. Needless to say, I am seeing monograms everywhere (napkins, invitations, cake toppers, etc.). Most letters stand for my sister and her fiance's first names, but my sister wants to incorporate the letter "B" (the initial for her new last name) into the festivities more. My future brother-in-law explained that he liked using both their initials because it felt more inclusive, while my sister argues that the single initial celebrates their unity. Hearing their discussion made me realize that so much is in a name. Just one letter can carry the weight of the past and even celebrate who you will become. Names can change (especially around this time of year), nails change, but who we are survives all of life's transitions. Growing up, I didn't care too much for my name, but now I jump at the chance to pick up anything monogrammed with the letter "B." This is why I was especially happy to have nail artist Mami Griffin place the letter on my nails along with a few other elements that spell out who I am and what I am all about. Like a monogram, our nails can stand for something bigger; they don't have to define us or fit a certain mold, but they can be embraced and even changed to celebrate whatever life throws our way. notes what's in a name?
