Working in Los Angeles
means Awards Season is treated
as the official fifth season in the calendar
year. I was lucky enough to attend beauty
suites for both the Grammys and the
Oscars where I got to meet some of
the manicurists to the stars like the
Footnanny and Melissa Bozant (far left).
This year it seemed so many
celebrities accepted statues and opened

envelopes with nail art adorning their
tips. I find that nails and entertainment never go out of
season. Our pop culture section proves that music, movies, television, books,
and the Internet all have influence on our nail art choices. I especially enjoyed featuring
nails inspired by Oz. The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies growing up. I
would watch it nonstop at my grandparent's house, where they also kept early editions
of the L. Frank Baum set neatly stacked on a bookshelf. Just thinking about Oz brings
back that sense of wonder and curiosity that is associated with childhood.
We can all bond over knowing the words to the same song, quoting a favorite line
from a book or movie, or referencing a starlet's style when getting dressed. These
references are able to move us long after the credits have rolled and the cover has
been closed. Whatever art form moves you, don't hesitate to move it onto your
nails. It just might remind someone of dreaming of a distant place over the rainbow,
why they yearned for glittery shoes, or even bring them home again. We can never
underestimate the power of art.
